How to revise for the IR(R) / IMC theory exam

The IR(R) theory exam rewards a particular kind of preparation. The syllabus is broad but the paper is short — 25 questions at a 75% pass mark — so there is nowhere to hide a weak subject. Six wrong answers is a fail. The good news: the exam is very learnable if you revise the right way.

Little and often beats cramming

Once section scores look healthy, move to full 25-question mock exams with no feedback until the end — exactly as the real paper works. This trains pacing and exposes the difference between recognising an answer and producing one under pressure.

A sensible readiness bar: several consecutive mocks comfortably above the 75% pass mark, with no single section dragging. One lucky 80% is noise; five in a row is evidence.

Don't neglect the practical skills

The chart-and-flight-plan questions are won with a plotter and flight computer in hand, not with reading. Practise measuring tracks, applying wind, and computing headings and times until the mechanics are fast and error-free — then the planning questions become free marks rather than a time sink.
